State Assessment Information (ACCESS) Spring 2020

State assessments serve as a measure of how well our students are performing relative to Minnesota's academic standards for college and career readiness as well as meeting federal and state legislation requirements. Results from these assessments allow us to see how well our schools are aligning curriculum and instruction to the expected levels of proficiency.

From these assessments, we gather information regarding how many students are right on track, how many students are exceeding those expectations, or which students may be in need of additional support. These data points can help schools monitor the effectiveness of their teaching and learning practices.

The ACCESS and Alternate ACCESS for ELLs are the assessments developed by the WIDA consortium and administered to English learners in order to measure progress toward meeting Minnesota’s standards for English language development, developed by the WIDA consortium. Most English learners will take the ACCESS for ELLs, but English learners who received special education services and meet the participation guidelines may take the Alternate ACCESS for ELLs. A link to the WIDA website can be found here.

Subject tests will be delivered to K-12 students as scheduled through their English Language Learner teacher.

A parent or guardian must take the following steps to refuse statewide testing:

  1. Complete and sign the Minnesota Department of Education Option to Refuse Testing Form.
  2. Meet with the school principal or designee to discuss the refusing testing process and turn in the District 834 Testing Refusal Explanation Form (must be submitted by 3/20/20). Refusing testing forms will be submitted to the Learning and Innovation Coordinator-Assessment by school personnel following the attainment of appropriate signatures.

*NOTE: The deadline to refuse testing in Spring 2020 is January 17, 2020 for ACCESS and March 20, 2020 for MCA/MTAS. Requests received after these dates will be considered on an individual basis. The district office may not be able to approve requests within 72 hours of your child's scheduled testing date/time. Please look for communication from your school or child's teacher with regard to the site-based testing schedules.
