Purpose of Program:

For many students, this will be their first experience in distance running. Whether you are an experienced runner, or a total novice, all are welcome and encouraged to join the team. My goal is to provide a fun, positive, and competitive running experience for Junior High students in hope that they continue their pursuit of distance running in high school and beyond.

Practice Details:

Our first day of practice is Wednesday, August 29.  We meet at 2:45 p.m. outside on the track. We finish practice typically around 3:45 p.m.. 

Make sure to bring a decent pair of running shoes, shorts, and a t shirt for the first day of practice.  Run n fun in St Paul (868 Randolph) has a good selection of running shoes and knowledgeable staff. Mention you run on your school's cross country team and you will get an additional discount of 20%.

Practices will involve a variety of activities such as core strength work, speed drills, and games. Most of the practice, however, consists of running a total of 2-5 miles. Workouts consist of longer easy runs of 3-5 miles, form running workouts, and interval workouts on the track. Workouts are designed to increase one's fitness and lower their times, and are appropriate for first time runners as well as seasoned veterans.

Practices are Monday-Thursday, but it is suggested athletes run once or twice over the weekend (Friday/Saturday/Sunday). Weekend runs can be at a slower, conversational pace and consist of 2-5 miles.

Meet Details:

On days we have meets, we gather at the north end of the school by the doors near the yellow shed. Most meets start at 3:45-4:00 p.m., but every race is a little different.  Athletes will run one race only, usually of distances of 2000 meters (1.25 miles). One of our races is 1600 meters (1 mile), and another one of the races is near 2400 meters (1.5 miles).  We usually get back to Oak-Land Junior High around 5:30-6:00pm.  I will have my cell phone available on the bus ride home for students to text or call home for pickup.

The day before a meet, at practice, I will give details of who we're competing against, when exactly each person will run, and when we expect to get back to Oak-Land Junior High.

A few expectations for meets:

Run in your Oak-Land Middle School t shirt.  You may wear your t shirt from last year (8th graders) from track or cross country, or you may use the t shirt from an older sibling who ran for Oak-Land.  Otherwise, starting the first day of practice, I will have t shirts for sale after practice.  Cost is $10 cash, or make check payable to Pete Hoyem.

Wear warm clothes. While you will most likely race in a t shirt and shorts, I strongly suggest bringing sweats and a sweatshirt to wear before races. Most meets involve sitting around for longer amounts of time, and in order to perform your best during the race, it is highly suggested you stay as warm as possible up until the race. If you wish to buy an Oak-Land CC hoodie (high quality adidas hoodie), they are for sale after practice for $40, cash or check payable to Pete Hoyem.

After the race you may go home with your parents or parent; just make sure to check in with me before you do so.  Otherwise, after all races have completed, the team will ride back together in the bus to OLJH.
