Schools closed remainder of school year

The Governor has ordered all Minnesota schools to remain closed with distance learning in place through the end of the 2019-2020 school year to help slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Back to School Supplies and Tech 2018-19

July 23, 2018

As the calendar moves into the second half of summer, many students and families begin to think about needed school supplies for the upcoming school year. For students and families who are new to SAHS, there are often questions surrounding what materials students need as they enter the high school. In an effort to assist students and families with questions like this, we polled 9th grade teachers last year in order to compile a list of supplies that students will need for 9th grade classes at SAHS.

The 9th grade supply list can be found at the following link:

Any course not included on the supply list (i.e. an elective course) will have information shared out by the teacher on the first day of school.

Questions also frequently arise concerning what technology needs students will have at SAHS.Will my student need a laptop? Will the school issue a technology device to my student? Can my student use their cell phone as an electronic device?

Several years ago, District 834 launched a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiative that encouraged students to bring an electronic device to school to use for internet research, file storage, word processing, and other school-related functions. Today more than ever, students need access to technology for school purposes, as we have expanded the uses of technology to include communication, assignment submission, and even assessment. While SAHS will issue technology devices to students who need them when access is required during a class period, we still encourage all students to obtain an electronic device and bring it to school every day.  All devices brought from home will need to be registered on the Pony network through the Technical Support Office located upstairs in the main rotunda.

SAHS strongly endorses the use of Google Chromebooks as the electronic device of choice for students. Chromebooks are used across content areas in classes at SAHS and can typically be purchased for around $200. While it is obviously not mandatory for students to have a Chromebook (or any other device), students who are able to bring their own device allow the school to stretch its resources further and provide more consistent access to more students. Many families have purchased graphing calculators for their student’s math class over the years, often spending around $90 for a tool that will primarily serve them in one or two classes. Considering that chromebooks are often used across SAHS in every curricular area, we hope that students and families who have the means will consider looking into this investment.

As part of a new initiative, SAHS has a limited number of devices which may be issued to 9th grade students who do not have access to a computer or the internet at home. Students and parents who require technology access must complete and submit the user agreement form which is linked below. Students may bring this form with them to school to submit to Katy Pupungatoa in the Black Pony Center on the first day and might have additional opportunity to check out a device beyond the first day if supplies remain. Demand for this program is quite high, however, and supplies will be checked out on a first-come, first-served basis. This opportunity is intended only for students who do not have access to a computer or the internet at home. Here is the link:

We look forward to seeing you in a few short weeks!
