ACT / MCA Day at SAHS - April 2nd

April 02, 2019

Tuesday, April 2 will be a unique day at Stillwater Area High School. Regular classes will not be in session for grades 10-12 while students in grade 9 will have a modified schedule (detailed below). The purpose of this day is to provide the time necessary for grade-level initiatives in: high-stakes assessments that measure proficiency on college and career benchmarks, assessing state standards in reading, a focus on mental and chemical health, and preparing seniors for graduation.

9th grade students will be participating in a modified learning format. Regular English, science, and social studies classes meet as scheduled. The additional hours will offer three classes periods of learning focused on physical, social, and emotional development with an emphasis on stress management.

10th grade students will be taking the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment for Reading on April 2. This assessment is necessary to measure our students' growth and proficiency of the state standards, meet legislative requirements, provide data for future course placement, and give feedback on college and career readiness. Sophomores will be testing all morning and have time after lunch to self-direct their studies in a flex time format.

11th grade students will be taking the ACT on April 2, at no cost to families. This assessment is used for most college and university admission requirements. The ACT Plus Writing has five components: English, mathematics, reading, science and writing. All 11th grade students will have the opportunity to take this exam or to opt out in writing with parent permission. Juniors will begin promptly at 7:40 a.m. and finish the assessment by 12:30 p.m. After lunch, they will have one hour to participate in flex time activities.

12th grade students will have a mandatory graduation meeting on April 2. This meeting will last approximately 45 minutes and will be held in the main forum room. Students will be assigned to a specific session based upon the first letter of their last name. Seniors will have the opportunity to complete required school work and projects in the cafeteria and media center before and/or after their class meeting as well as participate in flex time in the afternoon.
