2018-2019 Class Placement Guidelines and Parent/Student Information Form

April 13, 2018

 April 13th, 2018

Dear Rutherford Families,

I hope this letter finds you all well.  Over the past few weeks I have been working with staff to review our current class placement guidelines.  This is an important process and one we take very seriously.  As we begin to develop our class lists we take into account our guidelines and keeping in mind that we need to create a balanced classroom for our students.  Please know that this challenging process involves multiple variables.   Below you will find some of the variables we will consider as we develop class lists for the 2018 – 2019 school year:

·       Gender balance

·       Academic mix

·       Personality and learning styles

·       Peer relationships

·       Class size

·       Special needs

The objective is to place all students with a teacher in a balanced class that will support their learning and growth.  At Rutherford, we are very fortunate to have an exceptional group of teachers and staff to work with our students and families.

We will be providing families with the optional opportunity to fill out a “Parent/Student Informational Form”.  This form will be not be used for requesting a teacher, but will give you a chance to share valuable information about your child.  There will also be a spot for your child to share.  We will not be honoring specific teacher requests.  This form will be available online to families April 16th – April 27th.  We will have paper copies of the Parent/Student Informational Form in the front office if you are having difficulty downloading the online form.   Please have your child return the form to their current classroom teacher.  Ultimately, the forms will be given to your child’s new teacher once class lists are finalized.

Final class lists will be sent to families over the summer (date to be determined).

This is an important process that needs to be fair, consistent, and student focused.  Our staff will work hard to ensure your child is placed appropriately using the criteria previously stated.

Warmest Regards,

Heather Nelson

Rutherford Principal
