School Closings, Delays & Early Release

Information regarding School Closings, Delays or Early Releases
The decision to close schools is complex and the safety of our students and staff, especially those waiting at bus stops, is always the most important factor we consider when making the decision. We do not make a decision based on a specific temperature or snowfall benchmark, but rather assess a multitude of factors including temperature. It is largely based on the ability of school buses to travel the roads safely and the conditions bus riders will face while waiting for the bus. The National Weather Service is our source for weather information used to make this decision.

Parents and guardians always have the choice to keep their student(s) home if they feel the weather conditions are unsafe.

Due to the often unpredictable winter weather in Minnesota, in most cases we wait until the morning of each school day before notifying families. However, there may be rare instances when we make a decision the night before.

Notification of Change in School Day
Should a decision be made that will impact the school day, you will receive an automated phone message from the district as early as possible. School closing, delay or early dismissal information will be posted on our district and school websites, and on the district’s Facebook and Twitter feeds (search for Stillwater834). You can also listen and watch for an announcement on any of the local television stations (WCCO Channel 4, KSTP Channel 5, FOX Channel 9, and KARE 11) or listen to WCCO radio to get the latest information on school closings.

If your student lives in our school district but attends any program in a Northeast Metro 916 school building, please visit to determine whether your student’s school is canceled. If our district is closed but 916 is open, your student may attend school but we are not able to provide transportation. The vast majority of our students do not attend one of these programs.

If classes are canceled for an entire day, all regular after school and Community Education activities including Adventure Club/Spin, ECFE, adult and youth classes, and facility use are also canceled unless otherwise noted.

Specific announcements will be made if special activities scheduled can be held because of improved weather conditions.

If a decision is made to delay the start of school, starting times will be delayed two hours.

When there is a delayed start:

  • Full-Day Preschool will start two hours late
  • Morning Only preschool will be canceled
  • Afternoon Only preschool will start at the normal time
  • Morning ECFE classes will be canceled
  • Afternoon ECFE classes will start at the normal time
  • Morning ABE/ELL classes will be canceled
  • Afternoon ABE/ELL classes will start at the normal time

Parents and staff members should continue to watch for later announcements of a possible closing as more information is gathered on weather and road conditions.

All employees are required to report to work at their regular time or as close as possible to their regular time.

Staff members will be released to leave the building as soon as the principal determines that the safety of the children is assured. Custodians will be expected to work normal hours unless otherwise notified by the principal.

Delayed Start
If a school has a delayed start time due to inclement weather, Adventure Club and Spin staff members will attempt to get to the site as close to normal opening time as possible. You must call your site prior to leaving home to make sure that staff members have arrived and are in the building. Program sites will remain open until the start of the school day.

Early Release
If school is scheduled to close early due to inclement weather, Adventure Club staff members will keep Adventure Club kids scheduled for that day. You will need to pick up your child within 2 hours of school closing.

If it's a School Release Day...
Adventure Club and Spin will be canceled under only very extreme conditions based on driving conditions, building problems, and number of cancellations. Please call the School Release Day Site, or Community Education at 651.351.8300 for information about closing.

If classes are canceled for an entire day a decision to cancel after school athletics will be made by 10 a.m. If a weather emergency occurs late in the afternoon, and the normal school day has not been affected, the Athletic/Activities Supervisor will make decisions regarding cancellation of evening athletic competitions and student activities. Specific announcements will be shared on the district website.
