School Closings, Delays & Early Release

Information regarding School Closings, Delays, Flex Days and Early Releases

Throughout a school year there may be times when we are forced to make changes to our regular schedule to keep our students safe. These adjustments could include one of the following:

School could be cancelled or schedules altered if:

  • A building is deemed unsafe (ex. Gas leak)

  • Buses won’t start or run dependably.

  • Local road conditions in our neighborhoods are dangerous or impassable.

  • Bus riders face dangerous conditions while waiting for the bus.*

*Like neighboring districts, Stillwater schools will rely solely on forecasts provided by the National Weather Service.

Parents and guardians always have the choice to keep their student(s) home if they feel the weather conditions are unsafe.

Notification of Change in School Day
Should a decision be made that will impact the school day, you will receive an automated phone message from the district as early as possible. Information will be posted on our district and school websites, and on the district’s Facebook and Twitter feeds (search for Stillwater834). You can also listen and watch for an announcement on any of the local television stations (WCCO Channel 4, KSTP Channel 5, FOX Channel 9, and KARE 11).

If your student lives in our school district but attends any program in a Northeast Metro 916 school building, please visit www.916schools.org to determine whether your student’s school is canceled. If our district is closed but 916 is open, your student may attend school but we are not able to provide transportation.

School Closing
If classes are canceled for an entire day, all regular after school and Community Education activities including Adventure Club/Spin, ECFE, adult and youth classes, and facility use are also canceled unless otherwise noted.

Specific announcements will be made if athletics and other special activities scheduled can be held because of improved weather conditions.

Delay
If a decision is made to delay the start of school, starting times will be delayed two hours unless otherwise noted.

When there is a delayed start:

  • Preschool

    • Full-day preschool will start two hours late

    • Morning preschool will be canceled

    • Afternoon preschool will start at the normal time

  • ECFC classes

    • Morning ECFE classes will be canceled

    • Morning ABE/ELL classes will be canceled

    • Afternoon ECFE classes will start at the normal time

    • Afternoon ABE/ELL classes will start at the normal time

  • Adventure Club and Spin: Staff members will attempt to get to the site as close to normal opening time as possible. You must call your site prior to leaving home to make sure that staff members have arrived and are in the building. Program sites will remain open until the start of the school day.

Parents and staff members should continue to watch for later announcements of a possible closing as more information is gathered on weather and road conditions.

All employees are required to report to work at their regular time or as close as possible to their regular time, unless otherwise directed.

Flex Day
A Flex Day will be called following the second “snow day” of the school year. Students will complete assignments in an online or offline format. Learn more.

Early Release
In the event of deteriorating weather during the school day, it may be necessary to start after-school bus routes earlier than their scheduled dismissal time at some schools.Parents will be notified of an early release day by noon.

Adventure Club staff members will stay with students scheduled for that day. You will need to pick up your child within 2 hours of school closing.

Staff members will be released to leave the building as soon as the principal determines that the safety of the children is assured. Custodians will be expected to work normal hours unless otherwise notified by the principal.

Adventure Club and Spin will be canceled under only very extreme conditions based on driving conditions, building problems, and number of cancellations. Please call the site or Community Education at 651.351.8300 for information about closing.

If bad weather hits when school is not in session, Adventure Club and Spin will be canceled under only very extreme conditions based on driving conditions, building problems, and number of cancellations. Please call the site or Community Education at 651.351.8300 for information about closing.

Flex Days

Flex Days are intended to keep students learning when school is cancelled due to inclement weather.
