Conversation focus of new listening sessions

October 23, 2015

Community members are invited to share their concerns, ask questions, or just learn more about issues of interest by attending Listening Sessions prior to each school board meeting. See the calendar of meetings online. Archived recordings of sessions are also available.

Please sign up to speak at a Listening Session 48 hours in advance by submitting the Sign-Up Form or calling 651.351.8455. This ensures we have the appropriate staff members on hand to answer questions and address concerns.

The Listening Sessions are designed to create a more informal setting for residents to engage in conversations with district leaders about issues or concerns. The sessions will replace the more formal Open Forums that have previously taken place during board meetings. During Open Forums residents were invited to speak to the board, but board members and school staff did not have an opportunity to respond to questions or discuss the topic.

“We’d see people leave frustrated because they didn’t have resolution to their concerns,” said Tom Lehmann, school board chair. “We believe this new format will provide opportunities for people to not only share their concerns, but more importantly, it will let us respond to those concerns and make personal connections with people. It will help us communicate better and resolve issues more quickly.”

This board will pilot the new Listening Session format and will evaluate its effectiveness throughout the year.
