Stillwater Area High School student honored with Spirit of Community award

Acacia Ramberg, a senior at Stillwater Area High School, was recently named a Distinguished Finalist in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program.

The Minnesota School Boards Association has set Feb. 20-24 as School Board Recognition Week in Minnesota as a time to build awareness and understanding of the vital function an elected board of education plays in our society.

In light of new budget forecast information, school board members are considering a proposal developed by district administrators to delay for one year some of the budget adjustment items with the most significant impact on students.

New laws result in little change for school lunches

New federal regulations for school meals will have little impact on Stillwater Area Public Schools. That's because for the past several years we have been offering what the new regulations are mandating. Under the new nutrition standards set by the United States Department of Agriculture in January, schools will be required to offer fruits and vegetables every day, increase the amount of whole-grain foods and reduce the sodium and fats in the foods served.

For The Love of Music: Stillwater Area Public Schools District-wide Orchestra Practice-a-thon

Between concerts and competitions elementary and junior high orchestra musicians throughout the Stillwater Area Public School District will be logging extra practice hours - while at the same time raising money for their school's orchestra program - during the fifth annual "Orchestra Practice-a-thon" starting February 13.

Oak-Land Junior High students earn high honors in First Lego League competition

Two teams of students from Oak-Land Junior High earned 6th and 8th place in the state First Lego League competition. More than 400 teams from across the state competed at four different regional competition to earn a spot in the state championship.

Sara Damon, a ninth grade geography teacher at Stillwater Junior High, is one of 111 nominated for the honor of 2012 Minnesota Teacher of the Year.

School board hopeful as it looks at the revised budget forecast for the coming year

School board members today received good news regarding the budget forecast for the 2012-2013 school year.  Results of the recently released revised budget forecast show the district’s funding gap for the coming year has been adjusted from $10 million to about $6.3 million, with an additional $8.5 million gap anticipated in 2013-2014.

Spotlight: 6th Grade Girls at Lake Elmo Elementary Love the Skin They're In!

Twice a week, a group of 6th grade girls at Lake Elmo Elementary gather together to build community and utilize their unique talents in a program called Lovin' The Skin I'm In. Lovin' the Skin I'm In offers the girls a chance to strengthen their communication skills, increase their self-confidence and enhance their critical thinking abilities both inside and outside of their classrooms.
