Deb Van Klei is being honored by the Minnesota Society of Health and Physical Educators (MNSHAPE). She's been chosen to receive the Paul Schmidt Award which recognizes her outstanding services and contributions in the fields of health and physical education.

Van Klei has helped lead the district's innovative physical education program, which has garnered national attention for improving the overall health and wellness of students by focusing on lifetime physical fitness. See article: It's not the same old gym class.

Van Klei has worked for Stillwater Area Public Schools since 1998, serving as a teacher, coach and coordinator of the federal Physical Education Program (PEP) grant. Through the PEP Grant, students were able to learn about good nutrition and healthy eating habits, develop their own personal fitness programs, and monitor their physical fitness with things like pedometers and heart rate monitors.
