Two SAHS students named National Merit Semifinalists

September 16, 2016

Stillwater Area High School senior Marta Markowitz and 2016 graduate Jacob Kosyakovsky have been named a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. They’re among just 16,000 high school students from across the country to receive this honor.

About 1.6 million juniors entered the 2016 National Merit Program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screening. Less than one percent of all test-takers are named semifinalists. They will go on to compete for 7,500 scholarships worth $33 million that will be offered next spring.

To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, semifinalists must advance to finalist standing in the competition by writing an essay, obtaining letters of recommendation, and demonstrating high academic performance. Finalists will be named in February.
