Students watching Mississippi video

A unique partnership with Stillwater educators and Louisiana educators allowed hundreds of Stillwater students in grades 5-8 to participate in a live-stream electronic field trip to learn about the Mighty Mississippi River that connects these two states. Student reporters took them along the river's more than 2,000 mile journey from the headwaters at Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota to the city of New Orleans and the swamps of south Louisiana as the river flows to the Gulf of Mexico.

Students learned about many aspects of the river including the scope of the watershed and how the river has influenced culture and commerce. It was an excellent opportunity for interdisciplinary learning with real time Q & A. Thank you to WYES public television in New Orleans, Center for Global Environmental Education at Hamline University, and the Meraux Foundation in St. Bernard Parish, LA. for this opportunity for our students.
