Students in Dollars for Dreams Club
Stillwater Area High School's Dollars for Dreams Club passed the $15,000 mark today for microloans.
In just less than three years, the student group has raised money and lent $15,775 to 63 different recipients in 26 different countries. The groups mission is to help people move from poverty to self-sufficiency through micro lending, thus breaking the cycle of generational poverty.
Students involved in the club donate $1 per month and participate in fundraisers to support the club, but each loan is also repaid. Of the $15,775 that has been invested, only $7,333 is actual deposits from the club. The other $8,442 came from repaid loans that student re-invested in a new person or group.
The Dollars for Dreams Club has supported education, creating or growing small businesses, medical procedures, ecological projects and more. They've even helped purchase cows, pigs and chickens for farmers.
