Special delivery brings excitement to fourth grade class

November 16, 2017

The excitement of the holiday season came a few weeks early for students in Joelle Appert’s class at Rutherford Elementary. The fourth graders couldn’t wait to rip into boxes of books that were delivered for their classroom library.

“My students are so excited, you would think they were all receiving a puppy,” Appert said. “They are begging me to get the books on the shelves.”

Appert is one of about 40 teachers across the district piloting a new literacy program this year. As part of the program, each classroom is equipped with its own library featuring more than 700 books from a wide range of genres, formats and reading levels. By having books right there in the classroom, students can find a “just right” book to match their interests and their reading level any time.
