September 26, 2017

Stillwater Area High School social studies teacher Sara Damon has been given the first-ever Distinguished Educator Award by the Minnesota GIS/LIS Consortium. The award is given by her peers in the Minnesota GIS (Geographic Information System) and Education community.

The Distinguished Educator Award recognizes active educators (K-12 or Higher Education) who have demonstrated leadership, creativity, and enthusiasm for the effective use of geography and GIS. Damon was honored for making significant contributions to GIS education in both creating engaging curriculum for students and training educators.

Damon, who teaches AP Human Geography and Global Studies, has taken education related trips to the African countries of Ghana, Namibia and Kenya. She also spearheaded the H2O for Life - Water for South Sudan service learning project at Stillwater Junior High which raised more than $80,000 to build wells in South Sudan.
