Less cupcakes leads to more fun in district classrooms

October 19, 2017

It’s been more than a year since district staff, parents, teachers, doctors, dietitians, and community members came together to focus on our students overall health and wellness. The result - a wellness policy that has led the way for new initiatives and practices that are making a difference in the lives of our students.

Our Wellness Policy has renewed efforts to keep our kids active, help them choose more nutritious foods, and encourage healthier lifestyles.

While the wellness policy might be infamous for its efforts to limit cupcakes and sugary treats in the classroom, it’s really about so much more.  The policy, and more importantly the work that is taking place as a result, is helping us buck the national trend that suggests kids today will live FIVE YEARS LESS than their parents because of unhealthy lifestyles. We’re committed to doing our part to help our students become smarter, happier and live longer lives.

In just our first year, we’re already seeing students and teachers being more active during the school day. Our students now have more options for nutritious snacks, meals and concessions; and our schools are safer and more welcoming for those with allergies or dietary restrictions.

Check out this video to learn more about the great work that’s been taking place, and how our school community - students, teachers and parents - are responding.
