Student meets community mentor

Fourth graders at Lake Elmo Elementary aren’t just dreaming about what they want to be when they grow up, they’re actually exploring future careers.

Students in Robyn Splittstoesser’s class are participating in a project-based learning experience called “Why We Learn.” The hope of this project is to help students think about future career options in order to make the learning in fourth grade more meaningful to them.

Students were asked to think about their strengths and interests, and then select a career that they would like to explore. Not only did the students study their career of interest, but the also had the opportunity to meet volunteers from the community who work in some of those careers. Among the special guest visitors were a professional baseball player, librarian, train conductor, veterinarian, pediatrician, and law enforcement officer.
