Word detective visits first graders

As part of the Word Detective reading unit, Brookview Elementary first graders learned strategies to become stronger readers by taking a closer look at words. Students learned how to use their knowledge of sight words, as well as how to consider blends, digraphs, endings, and compound words to decode new and challenging words.

At the end of the unit a word detective (aka fifth grade teacher Steve Bliven) surprised the students and left one final mission! Students solved a mystery to discover a gift box that included invisible ink pens. Children finished the celebration by going on a word scavenger hunt using their pens to record their answers.

The Word Detective unit is part of a new literacy program that is being piloted at Brookview Elementary, and in dozen of classrooms across the district.
