First day of school delayed for K and grades 11 and 12

March 10, 2017

The start of the 2017-2018 school year has been adjusted to help transition students into the new year this fall.

Under the newly approved calendar:

  • Students in grades 1-10 will begin school on Monday, August 28.
  • School will begin for juniors and seniors at the high school on Tuesday, August 29.
  • The first, full day of kindergarten will be Wednesday, August 30.
  • Preschool begins on Tuesday, September 5.

The tiered start dates will provide time to more smoothly transition students into their new learning spaces at the start of the year.

Link Crew coming to high school
Ninth and tenth graders will have the first day of the school year to get familiar with their new building and connect with teachers and classmates. This will be the first year of the Link Crew orientation program, which pairs small groups of ninth and tenth grade students with a junior or senior leader. With their Link Crew leaders, students will be able to walk their class schedule and meet their teachers, learn about the clubs and activities available to them, ask questions, and forge new friendships.

The first full day of school for juniors and seniors will be on Tuesday, August 29.

Kindergarten students get “Ready, Set, Go”
The first day of school for kindergarten students will be delayed by two days in order to provide time for teachers to meet personally with students for Ready, Set, Go conferences. These conferences allow time for teachers to get to know each child personally, watch how they interact with other students, and complete a short assessment of kindergarten readiness skills.

Monday and Tuesday of the first week of school will be set aside for students to come in for a half-hour conference. The first full day of the school year for kindergarten students would be Wednesday, August 30.

Preschool students will also conference with teachers before the start of school
Preschool students attending district elementary schools will be asked to attend "Get to Know You" conferences on Aug. 28 and 29. Families will be invited to bring their children in for half-hour conferences with teachers as an opportunity to get to know each other and talk about the coming school year. The first day of preschool classes will be Tuesday, September 5.
