Aspiring young writers learn from an award-winning author

A recent visit by an award-winning author had students across the district talking about books, and wondering if they have what it takes to write them.

Stephanie Bodeen, who has published dozens of children’s picture books and young adult novels, visited Andersen, Lake Elmo, Marine, Oak Park and Withrow elementary schools this month to talk about the writing process. She shared her personal story of becoming a writer, and answered insightful questions from the students. She admitted that writing isn’t easy and hasn’t made her rich, but that with lots of practice she’s found a career she loves.

She encouraged aspiring authors to be readers first, to practice every day, and take advantage of the tools they’re gathering in school in classes like English.

“It’s so much fun to meet the readers,” Bodeen said. “So much of what I do is isolating, just sitting at a desk writing. I love to see kids excited about books and reading.”
