2014 - Robert "Bob" W. McGarry II

Robert McGarry II

Bob McGarry (Class of 1951) dedicated his life to his family and the St. Croix Valley. He was a raconteur with an inimitable Irish wit and keen interest in local history. Bob recorded stories of early Stillwater, its ethnicity, neighborhoods and the characters.  He spent his life immersing himself not only in the insurance business but also in the local community. He served on the Stillwater Chamber of Commerce and was a volunteer coach for Little League football, which was a forerunner of today's Community Education.

He collaborated to establish the Valley Athletic Association, leading to St. Croix Valley Athletic Association.  He established the Jerry McGarry Award, an annual basketball college scholarship given to an outstanding senior on the Pony Boys' Basketball team for the past 45 years. As an avid fan of Pony activities, in 2007 he and Dick Olsen organized and published a history of Stillwater Athletics: “Pony Tales from the Sidelines to the Stands.”
