Culver "Cub" Davis will tell you the notion for Cub Foods was Jack and Charlie Hooleyʼs, Bob Thuesonʼs, and his, but taking credit doesnʼt seem as important to Culver Davis Jr. as the joy he gets from the challenges of running a business.

The 1958 SAHS graduate said competitors didn’t believe the first Cub (Consumers United for Buying) store would make it after it opened in 1968, but he was dedicated to getting food to the consumer at the lowest possible price. “It’s all about volume,” he said as he described the company’s growth from one store with 22 employees to more than 100 stores with 400 to 500 employees at each location.

Cub and his wife Judy Davis have volunteered since 1991 at The Golden Living Center-Linden (calling, playing and awarding prizes in bingo to the seniors there); have helped out at the Valley Food Shelf and Family Violence Network; and have supported the Stillwater Library and Lakeview Hospital.
