Sally Johnson Novetzke was the US Ambassador to Malta from 1989-1993.

 Prior to her ambassadorial service, she was involved with the following political activities for the State of Iowa: Precinct Chairman from 1976-1988; Co-Chairman, Linn County Republican Party from 1979-1980; Chairman, Linn County Republican Party from 1980-1983; Member, (2nd District) Republican Party of Iowa from 1982-1985; State Chairman, Republican Party of Iowa from 1985-1987; Iowa Federation of Republican Women of Iowa from 1987-1989; Vice Chair of Campaigns, National Federation of Republican Women Advisory Board from 1987-1989; and a member of the National Women's Coalition. She has worked on a number of political campaigns, including State Co-Chairman, George Bush for President in 1988; the 1980 and 1984 Reagan/Bush campaigns; the 1980 Bush for President campaign; Tom Tauke's Congressional campaign, and numerous others. Ambassador Novetzke also was a Delegate to the State, District and County Republican conventions from 1974-1988; the Republican National Convention in 1980; and, a member of the National Rules Committee. In 1984, she was a Delegate to the Republican National Committee and served on the Permanent Organization Committee. She was a Delegate-at-Large to the 1988 Republican convention.

Currently, she serves as the Vice President of the Hoover Presidential Library and is a lifetime Trustee. Ambassador Novetzke is a Trustee of Shattuck/St. Mary's (private school) in Minnesota, a member of former Secretary of State Baker's Public Policy Board, and Chairman of the Grants Committee for the Greater Cedar Rapids Foundation.

She attended Carleton College and holds an Honorary Doctorate degree in the Humanities. In October 1992, she was accepted as a Dame of the American Association of the Sovereign Military Order of the Knights of St. John of Malta. Ambassador Novetzke is the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from Carleton College.
