School board to spend next month deliberating fall budget cuts

After three months of work, the Budget Adjustment Advisory Committee (BAAC) officially handed over its budget adjustment recommendation to the school board last night. The school board now has the next month to consider the more than 100 recommended items as it sets out to cut the 2012-2013 budget by as much as $10 million. A final vote on budget cuts for next fall is expected March 8.

The recommended list includes changes to transportation and school start and end times; reductions in teaching, administration, and support staff; increases in fees for sports and activities; reductions in programs across the district; and much more. View the list online.

The school board will hold a special day-long workshop next Friday, Feb. 10, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. to discuss in greater detail several of the items on the list. Additional workshops may be scheduled to continue these discussions. Workshops are open to the public and an agenda will be posted to the district’s website two or three days prior.

While building its recommendation, BAAC members prioritized more than 200 budget cutting ideas submitted by staff and community members. The budget adjustment recommendation is broken into three tiers of about $4 million each - with Tier 1 having the least impact on students and Tier 3 having the most impact on students. A final tier, Tier 4, lists future items that could be considered in the event additional reductions are necessary in 2013-2014 and beyond.

Over the next month, staff and community members will have the opportunity to weigh in with their feedback on this list. Comments gathered during that time will be shared with school board members as they prepare to make a final decision.
