Parents, community and staff asked to provide input on budget cut list

School board members are looking for your input as they consider $10 million in budget adjustments for the 2012-2013 school year.

More than 350 community members attended the two public hearings to learn more about the proposed budget adjustments and voice their concerns and questions. If you didn't make it to a public hearing, you can view the recommended budget adjustment list on our website and share your feedback on our Community Conversation website.

The budget adjustment list consists of more than 100 items that could potentially be cut from the district's budget. The list includes changes to transportation and school start and end times; reduction in teaching, administration, and support staff; increases in fees for activities; reductions in programs across the district; and much more.

This list was developed by the Budget Adjustment Advisory Committee (BAAC), which was made up of community members and staff. While building its recommendation, BAAC members prioritized more than 200 budget cutting ideas submitted by staff and community members. The budget adjustment recommendation is broken into three tiers of about $4 million each - with Tier 1 having the least impact on students and Tier 3 having the most impact on students. Ultimately, the school board will use this recommendation as a guide as they select items to total $10 million in needed budget reductions. A final tier, Tier 4, lists future items that could be considered in the event additional reductions are necessary in 2013-2014 and beyond.

Over the next month, staff and community members will be asked to weigh in with their feedback on this list. Comments gathered during that time will be shared with school board members as they prepare to make a final decision on March 8.
