Important information about 2020-2021 School Meals

All students eat for free! Free meals are now available to all children in the school district (ages 1-18). The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced it will waive all fees for school meals through December 31, 2020, or earlier if funding runs out. This is an extension of the summer meals program that provided more than 185,000 meals to families throughout distance learning and into the summer.

How will my student get their free meals?

When learning at school:

  • Breakfast and lunch will be available at no cost to students when they are in school on an in-person or hybrid learning schedule.
  • For high school students choosing early release, free hot and cold grab and go lunches will be available for them to take with them once their class is released to lunch. (Students choosing this option will be asked to immediately exit through door 4W to avoid overcrowding in the cafeteria.)

When learning at home:

  • A week’s supply of both breakfasts and lunches will be available for pickup on Fridays (unless otherwise noted for holidays, etc.) from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at Stillwater Area High School and Brookview Elementary.
  • Meals will be available for hybrid learners for days students are not in the buildings.
  • 100% online learners and distance learners will receive meals for all scheduled school days.
  • Free meals will only be provided for scheduled school days. Meals will not be provided on holidays or scheduled days off.

Fill out those Free & Reduced Application forms

Even though meals are free for the first few months of school, you still need to fill out your Free & Reduced Application form. This ensures you’ll have help paying for meals after December 31, and also helps you cover costs for other school-related activities. In addition, it grants our district access to federal funding to support our schools.  Complete the 2020-2021 Free & Reduced Meal Application online or request one by calling 651-351-8326.

Please Note: Families MUST fill out a new application for benefits at the beginning of each school year or benefits will expire!

School meals offer students:

  • Age-appropriate calorie limits and portion sizes.
  • Daily servings of fresh fruits and vegetables. Please note: all students must take at least one 1/2 cup serving of fruit/vegetables with his/her lunch meal and at least 1/2 cup juice or fruit with his/her breakfast meal.
  • White or flavored fat-free milk or 1% white milk.
  • Whole grain breads, pastas and grains.
  • Lean proteins from meat and non-meat sources.
  • Foods with reduced sodium and limited amounts of saturated fats.

Stillwater Nutrition Services purchases foods that have been specifically formulated for schools, which means the items are lower in calories, sodium, fat and sugar versus what can be found in the retail market.

Kindergartner students eat breakfast FREE! Thanks to 2014 legislation, the State of Minnesota provides breakfasts for all kindergarten students free of charge.
