Helping ALL Students Become College Ready

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID is a global, research-based organization providing direct support for students K-16 who have the potential to become college students. All three secondary buildings are AVID certified sites.

The Mission of AVID

AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing ALL students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID was designed to give extra support to students in the academic middle and those students who are typically underrepresented on college campuses.

The AVID Elective

Eligible students will need to apply and interview for the AVID Elective. Held during the regular school day, the AVID Elective curriculum focuses on writing, college and careers, strategies for success, and critical reading. Students receive extra support in preparing for college entrance exams, engaging in community service opportunities and the college application process. The AVID classroom tutors are a critical component of the course and help support the additional rigor that is required of all AVID Elective students.

Being in AVID is voluntary. AVID students sign the AVID Student Agreement indicating their commitment to the program and to their success. The initial commitment is one year. Students are highly encouraged to continue in AVID as they progress through junior high school and throughout high school. Students must maintain a 2.5 or higher GPA throughout the school year to remain eligible for the course.
